Athlon: Socket A
Today the highest performance is provided by nVidia nForce2 chipset. It also ensures maximum functionality as compared to those from VIA and SiS. The chipsets of the latter cost a bit less but for home user the price isn’t always that critical. Currently VIA is ready to release KT400A with dual-channel DDR interface so the race goes on.
Our conclusion is obvious: without support from chipset manufacturers AMD could hardly achieve the today’s success. Athlon XP with proprietary AMD 760 chipset would look inferior to the Intel-based systems. Xp and vista socket a mainboard drivers.
In this regard Intel continues to perfectly combine the production of CPUs with designing of respective chipsets. Thanks to efforts made by Intel we always get the best platform for new CPUs at our disposal. So there is no need to care about Intel. However AMD cannot boast good state of affairs. Please keep in mind that we get good performance for a nice price thanks to competition only.
